Custom Crafted Bird Houses and Feeders

How it Started:

Thanks for visiting. This is where I can showcase one of my favorite crafts, and hopefully you alsowill find something that you like . “Birds of a Feather”started, in a manner of speaking, by accident. As many of you can relate to, I have almost always worked two jobs. It started when I wanted my first apartment at 18, then I got married and my wife and I decided she would stay home to raise the kids, and so on and so on until one day I got sick of never having time for myfamily or hobbies because of the 2nd job. Long story short, I turned a great hobby and my enjoyment of nature into my first business. My goal is to be a benifit to nature by providing safe and useful feeders and houses for birds, bats and squirrels, enrich my life by spending more time doing something I enjoy, and hopefully provide you with something you will enjoy for many many years. I still spend more hours than I probably should at my part time job, but it is spent in my woodshop, at my house, with my family, doing something I love. I think you will find everything at a reasonable price.

About my Houses and Feeders:

My houses and feeders are designs I have created based on personal experiences in my own back yard, as well as countless articles I have read on the right way to construct a structure for the birds. My main objectives are to build a house or feeder that is beneficial to the birds and, pleasing to the human eye as well. I use two basis woods, 1st cut white pine, and cedar. The pine makes a very nice house that will last for several years. These come stained or painted, depending on your preference. The cedar (my favorite) makes what I think is the most beautiful houses and feeders. Andthere are so many choices on the finish. I recommend leaving them natural as cedar will turn a gray color over time. You can also decide to stain or use a natural preservative coating. What ever your choice, make sure not to use any of these products on the inside of the houses as this can be toxic for the babies. All my houses and feeder are assembled with top quality exterior screws and pre-drilled holes. This helps prevent premature cracking. The houses are all made with cleanout access for that regular maintnance. Each house and feeder is made by me, one at a time in my woodshop. I promise you I will never get rich building them like this, but I am sure that you will get a house or feeder that I am proud of and would not hesitate to hang in my yard. You will also find the option of adding a preditor gaurd and a copper portal protector to every house to keep those pesky squirrels and raccoons at bay and away from an easy meal. Welcome and thanks for logging on! This web site is dedicated to those of us that enjoy creating and learning new things. We want to open the world of crafting to you as well as pick your brain for fun new projects. My favorite personal craft is working with wood. As one of my favorite past times is watching the wild birds in the back yard of my central Florida country home, I find real joy in creating houses and feeders for these little guys. It is truly a joy to watch a cardinal land on a feeder you made, or watch a baby sparrow take the proverbial leap of faith, on their first flight out of a bird house you crafted.

I think I came by this naturally as both my parents enjoyed crafts as well as showing me how to enjoy creating things also. My father was also a wood worker, and my mother, you name it, she probably did it. Sewing, knitting, painting, drawing, and probably the biggest collection of holiday crafts a kid could imagine.

So that’s the theme. We want to talk about, learn how to, and share our knowledge about any and every craft project that interest you. In the pages to follow we will give you a chance to share your favorite projects as well as giving you an opportunity to ask questions about projects you want to try.

Cedar Bluebird House

You are looking at a bluebird house from Birds of a Feather. This bird house is made by hand of 100% cedar. The design will house several species of birds but is designed mainly for eastern bluebirds. Other species that may take a liking to it are Warblers, swallows, woodpeckers and yellow bellied sapsuckers. The dimensions of the house are 6 ½ wide x 7 deep x 11 ½ tall. You choose smooth sanded or rough natural cedar, all put together with top quality exterior screws. All holes are pre-drilled to reduce cracking. One side panel opens to provide cleaning access at the end of each season.(see pictured) The access hole is 1 ½ inches. This house includes a 3”X3”X3/4” predator guard as well as a solid copper portal protector. These additions help prevent little arms reaching inside as well as woodpeckers or squirrels chewing on the opening to gain access.All together that means years of enjoyment watching the birds in your back yard.
